Expert guiding for the visitors by the author of the Exhibition Biljana Vukotić, senior curator of Museum of Applied Art

The appearance of a woman artist over the last several years with her specific creativity, with her bold, radical, artistically mature designs, contributed to the revival of our artistic ambience. This exhibition features the selected works by eleven woman artists, their multimedia and conceptual works taken mostly from the collection of Museum of Applied Art. We invite you to let yourselves into the intimate, ecological and socially engaged codes of their works, thus becoming a part of this creative energy.

Along with the author of the exhibition Biljana Vukotić, senior curator of Museum of Applied Art, the tour through the exhibition will be hosted by the guests, artists Valentina Savić and Vesna Šaula.

The conceptual research as well as interdisciplinary reflections on diverse artistic phenomena in the works created by Valentina Savić made an important contribution to new positioning of women artists, who became visible through their activities within various cultural and artistic areas, thus breaking down the stereotypes about differences between male and female identities.

The works created by Vesna Šaula represent reflections on versatile relationships between the body and its surrounding, between patriarchal and consumerist societies, as well as the sexual self-emancipation of a woman.

The expert exhibition guidance has been prepared by the author of the exhibition Biljana Vukotić, senior curator at MAA, art historian Jelena Gagić and guest artist Ljubica Jocić Knežević

The exhibition A Woman Artist New Subjects and Ideas in Serbian Ceramics after 2000 opens doors to self-identification and socially responsible and engaged discourses. Priority of ideas, formal construction of works, top abilities and skills used in treatment of the material – all this can be seen in the individual authorial attitudes excelling in skillful transition from one medium to the other.

Thanks to the energy of young women artists, the awareness about new ceramics has developed in the new millennium. Their most significant achievements like the installation Searching for the Beauty of Ljubica Jocić have become part of the Museum fund.

Lectures

The First Half of the Twentieth Century Belgrade Women Artists and Applied Art

In the first half of the twentieth century a smallish group of women artists engaging in applied art worked in Belgrade. Their work covered mostly those areas considered to belong to “woman’s realm” – arranging and decoration of homes, dressing and teaching. They have contributed to the development, modernization and democratization of applied art in the Serbian society without undermining its patriarchal gender code. Their male colleagues did not conceive them as competition and the public showed sympathy and curiosity. Nowadays these women artists are almost completely forgotten and only very few of their achievements had been preserved.
