Nooshin Sadeghian is a 2019 Golden Pen winner. The received award convinced this young Iranian woman that she is on the right path and that drawing is her calling. She practised for a long time and wondered if her artistic poetics was valuable enough to be presented to the public. However, the mentioned award was the wind in her sails. That was the first time she participated in an international competition.

Nooshin Sadeghian says: Illustration is the medium that is greatly influenced by the story and its content. Since the content of this year’s story is symbolic, I have decided to emphasise its abstract sides by using shapes and colours in order to be able to convey its symbolism. Furthermore, I have juxtaposed its positive and negative sides to better show the conflict of good and evil.

The author’s work is directly influenced by the culture of her hometown, so she uses the features of old Iranian paintings, i.e., Persian miniatures. Nooshin mainly depicts the fusion of Persian miniatures and the modern approach. In certain aspects her current works are similar to old Persian paintings, mainly in terms of their perspective. Their forms are simple, while the blue and orange colours are incorporated into the visual expressions that help the viewer to actively perceive the essence of the work, and thus understand the symbolic aspect of the story.
