The guest exhibition of art glass from South Korea in the gallery of Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade is an occasion to recall our own Museum’s glass collections.
Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade possesses important glass collections. Among its possessions are high quality specimens of glassworks done in Jagodina and Paraćin factories, works by Émile Gallé, precious examples made at State Manufacture in Vienna, as well as the most important creations designed by contemporary artists who marked both historical and artistic development of contemporary art glass in the country.
During its sixty-years-long activities, Museum of Applied Art featured twenty-two exhibitions dedicated to this medium. Some of them were designed to illustrate the history of development of art glass, while others were individual shows of the most important artists who worked in this medium.
Ever since the end of the 1990’s, there has been a noticeable and significant slackness in the production of glass as well as in the interest in this medium shown by artists in our country. Exhibitions of glass have been rare and scarce during the last several years. Seen from this perspective, the exhibition of glass art objects arriving from South Korea seems all the more important. It will feature twenty-eight works by twenty-eight Korean artists, selected by Professor and artist Sung-Won Park from Korean National University of Arts, School of Visual Arts. This is the first exhibition in Museum of Applied Art originating from Asia, and the fact that it comes from friendly Korea renders our pleasure even greater. With the quality of their execution, as well as with their aesthetic dimensions, the works by Korean artists possess special flair and deserve special attention of our capital’s cultural public. With the realization of this exhibition, Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade is offering the Belgrade art scene an exquisite experience, and we are happy to have succeeded in this venture owing to the kind cooperation of our Korean friends.
Mr. Sung-Won Park in text in catalogue says: “The Future of Korean Glass Formative Arts, Steps on Balkan` contributed by the Museum of Applied Art-Belgrade is held with an attempt to introduce artistic beauty and greatness of Korean glass formative arts. The exhibition therefore, designs to select the artists who have contributed to and left one’s traces behind in history of Korean glass formative arts. Its history isn’t that long. The mean age of the first generation of artists is only 50s. But they introduce their works through diverse exhibitions in various parts of the world, and have achieved remarkable growth so far.”
