In the period from 11 May to 24 June 2023, the Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade will host an exhibition dedicated to photographer Camilla Ylla Koffler (1911 – 1955). Camilla Koffler began her art education at the sculpture department of the School of Art in Belgrade, where she took the pseudonym ‘Ylla.’ She then continued her career in photography in Paris and New York. As the first female animal photographer, she dedicated herself to photographing animals – pets, zoo inhabitants, as well as those in the African wilderness and the regions of India – with a deep respect for their character and personality, as if they were human beings. The photographs, mostly made in series, were published in magazines, exhibited in many famous world galleries and displayed in thematic picture books, with texts by authors such as Jacques Prévert.
The exhibition at the Museum of Applied Art will feature digital reproductions of Ylla’s photographs and documentary material donated to the Museum by Mr. Pryor Dodge, Ylla Koffler`s heir and copyright owner of her legacy.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog, and during its duration, until 24 June, guided tours, lectures and photography workshops will be held.
