CONTEMPORARY POLISH JEWELLERY FROM LEGNICA

12 May - 05 June 2005

Programme coordinator: Dejan Sandić, International Cooperation Curator
The Art Gallery in Legnica was founded in 1971 as a state-owned institution, and since its very beginnings it has represented a place of gathering for contemporary artists. Within its regular exhibition programme, next to works of art – paintings, sculptures, drawings, pieces in ceramics and glass, textile and design – film projections, concerts, workshops, courses and lectures, as well as academic simposia on modern art take place. In a word, Legnica represents a focal point of contemporary art not only in Poland, but on an international scale, too.

For more than twenty five years, the Art Gallery in Legnica has specialized in promoting contemporary jewellery and objects of art made of silver. Since 1979 an international competition dealing with the art of silver has been organized there, as the oldest and most significant event concerned with jewellery art not only in Poland, but throughout Europe, which has been attracting numerous artists from all over the world. Joachim Sokulski has contributed to these international reviews, first as one of the authors, and later as the founder of the “925 – Joachim Sokulski” award.

The “Contemporary Polish Jewellery From The Art Gallery In Legnica” exhibition presents works of more than thirty leading Polish artists and jewellery designers already well known throughout the world – J. Bycewski, T.J. Jaworscy, M.T.L. Zaremscy, J. Rochacki, G. Jablonski, A. Bandkowski, A. Bielak, A. Boss, A. Bruzda, P. Cieciura, S. Fialkowski, T. Ogrodowski, J.B. Suchodolski, A. Szadkowski, J. Westermark, as well as young artists – J. Jabcszynski, P. Kaczynski, M. Shoeneck, A. Zaremski, D. Zaranski, J. Zeligowki, who will certainly mark new directions in artistic jewellery in Poland.
