The search for female authorship in porcelain: an exhibition by artist Valentina Savić
Starting from post-structuralist feminist theories, the exhibition of Valentina Savić, PhD, Home economics class: I’ll show you mine if you show me yours, deals with the topic of women’s authorship in ceramics and from that point of view, it examines the issues of prejudice, freedom, institutional canons, consumer society, traditions and gender roles. For over two decades, Savić has cultivated a unique approach to ceramics, balancing between sculpture and design, as well as developing her research and reflections in porcelain. Problematizing contemporary social phenomena, she has created her own mise-en-scène using profoundly intimate motives, philosophical thought and the language of gender art. The objects on display, from everyday items to a ceramic industrially produced urinal, metaphorically refer to and problematize social phenomena and gender roles.
The exhibition Home economics class – I’ll show you mine if you show me yours was chosen by the Council of the Museum of Applied Art Salon following a public competition, as part of the 2023 exhibition program of the Museum of Applied Art. Large multimedia ceramic installations are structured according to conceptual units and follow several phases in Savić’s creativity. The exhibition features a new production of artworks made specifically for this exhibition, as well as the artist’s items from the Collection of the Museum of Applied Art, along with some older referential artworks.
