The exhibition entitled “Some Other Places” displays the results of connecting scientific research and technological innovations in the world of art. This exhibition, the first in a series, is part of the research portfolio of the Center for Public Policy Research (Re: People). It was created in the partnership between Re: People and the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGI), University of Belgrade, with a simple but important goal – to encourage the sustainable economic development of Serbia.

Guided by this challenge, the exhibition curator Ivan Šuković invited artists Emilija Radojičić, Sonja Lundin, Jovana Čavorović, Dragana Lukić and Emir Šehanović to initiate new readings with their works in a variety of art media, whereupon the juxtaposition of elements seeks to create a critical and conceptual friction between the work and practices with a scientific foundation.

The exhibition accounts for nature as the absolute origin of reality, based on scientific methods and precise experiments. All the works of art are interwoven with biopigments and microorganisms taken from different natural habitats in Serbia. Biopigments as a natural substitute for artificial pigments have various economic and technological advantages, and therefore, the conceptual framing of this project touches on the issue of the effect of natural heritage as a way of thinking. The artistic presentation is based on research led by biochemist Jasmina Nikodinović-Runić, PhD, from IMGGI. This scientific project was established based on the principle of taking live bacteria – Streptomyces – from different locations in Serbia. Their subsequent life cycle in laboratory conditions is revalued as a process of productive transformation into pigments that become applicable on materials.

Regardless of this strong scientific basis, the exhibition “Some Other Places” does not necessarily bring merely a detached, scientific perspective, but also an emotional and personal connection that arises from its origin filtered through experiment, while heritage and the topographical remains of life are the focus of artistic research.

This exhibition is the result of the continuous research work of the Center for Public Policy Research (Re: People), in discovering the leading Serbian innovative economic and scientific sectors. Within that process, the scientific project of Jasmina Nikodinović-Runić, PhD, has demonstrated the strong transformative power that biopigments can have when applied to various sectors of the economy. Re: People are to organize exhibitions once a year that examine this seemingly unexpected connection between art and science.

THE ART TEAM OF THE EXHIBITION “SOME OTHER PLACES”

Ivan Šuković (b. 1981, Podgorica) received his doctorate at the University of Arts in Belgrade, Department of Multimedia Art (2019). He earned his master’s degree at the Department of Digital Arts and New Media in Belgrade, and his BA in literature at the Department of Philosophy within the University of Montenegro. From 2011 to 2022, he held several solo exhibitions in the country and abroad. He has been awarded for his creativity, and his works are part of museum as well as private art collections. Šuković was the representative of Montenegro at the 59th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale held in 2022. He lives and creates in Belgrade.

Emilija Radojčić (b. 1989, Belgrade) completed her BA studies in 2015 at the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade, majoring in applied graphics, and in 2021 she completed her master’s degree in Theory of Art and Media at the University of Arts in Belgrade. Her recent works alternate between art and design, as she delves into the three-dimensional and tactile aspects of drawing, textiles and sculpture through various materials and media. Until now, she has held solo and group exhibitions, audio/visual performances, collaborations and publications with various artists, curators, institutions, galleries and brands in the country and abroad.

Jovana Čavorović (b. 1985, Belgrade), within her poetics combines fine art with a contemporary Japanese approach to the practice of crafting ceramic objects. She graduated in 2010 from the Faculty of Applied Arts, University of Belgrade, the Department of Ceramics. In 2020, she completed a two-year research project at the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center Ishoken in Japan. To date, she has held solo and group exhibitions, being awarded several times. Her works are a part of museum and private art collections. She is the co-founder of the Belgrade-based Blatobran Gallery.

Dragana Lukić (b. 1998, Belgrade) completed her master studies in 2022 at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade, in the class of Professor Adam Pantić. She has held solo exhibitions in Bijeljina and Belgrade, and has been a part of group exhibitions in Belgrade and Timisoara. She is a participant in the projects “Nature is my homeland” (Krakow), “Zenit 21/21” (Zagreb) and “BečBijeljina” (Bijeljina).

Sonja Lundin (b. 1997, Stockholm, Sweden) completed her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade, majoring in graphics, and her MA in 2022 at the department of painting. Sonja mainly deals with multimedia paintings with collage, screen-printing and drawings with different crayons, felt-tip pens and photo-transfer techniques. Sonja’s themes are mainly related to family and intimate social structures, as well as multiculturalism according to in her own experience of the Serbian and Swedish cultures. She has exhibited at solo and group exhibitions.

Emir Šehanović (b. 1981, Tuzla) has, in addition to the region, exhibited his works of art at the independent group exhibitions Jeune Création, Les Beaux-Arts se Paris (2018), AQB Project Space Budapest (2018), Ultrastudio Los Angeles (2018), Gallery Weekend Berlin (2015), Athens Video Art Festival (2013), among others. He also participated in the Liste Art Fair (2015), Parallel Vienna, ArtGeneve (2018), Vienna Contemporary, and ArtGeneve (2019). Šehanović was recently included in the selection of emerging sculptors in 100 Sculptors of Tomorrow, a publication published by Thames and Hudson. He lives and works in Belgrade.
